Music & Organ

The Church of the Annunciation has excellent acoustics for choral and organ music.  Its ground plan is relatively small, but the high stone vaulting adds resonance and bloom to the sound, giving the sense to the listener of a larger, cathedral-like space.

The choir
The professional choir (5 voices, SSATB) sings at Sunday morning mass throughout the year and for other special services.  Its repertoire ranges from plainsong and renaissance polyphony to music of the present day.

The choir is a small friendly group, with a commitment to high musical standards.  We are always happy to hear from singers interested in deputy work, or in joining us when we have an enlarged choir for special occasions. For more information

please email church@annma.org.uk

or write to the Director of Music

Your 'Special Occasion'

With suitable notice we can provide singers for weddings, memorial services and other special occasions.  If you are planning such an event at the Annunciation, please contact the Director of Music who can help with choice of music and other arrangements.

The organ
The organ, originally built by Rothwell in 1915, underwent a major restoration by Bishop and Son in 1989. The specification covers a wide tonal palette.  Combined with the church's acoustic, this makes for an effective organ sound for many styles of music.

The Director of Music
Christopher Saward joined the Church of the Annunciation in 1992,

and has won acclaim for the 'verve and panache' of his Bach playing [The Organ].
An FRCO at the age of nineteen, he was previously Assistant Organist and Acting Director of Music at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge.

His special interests are in the performance of J.S. Bach, modern

French organ music and in free organ improvisation for liturgical

and ceremonial use.
